Happy New Year, everyone! I wanted to kick off this new year, and decade, with a fresh reintroduction to my practice, my training, and my skincare philosophies. For existing clients, this post is meant to give you a little more background on the treatments you may have already enjoyed or are considering, as well as give you the chance to learn a bit more about me – the woman behind your skin’s journey to health. And for anyone new to Sound Skincare (or to our small town of Tofino!), allow me to introduce myself: my name is Rylee and I started my holistic skincare studio in 2017, driven by years of specialized training and a passion for helping people achieve more sound health through holistically treating their largest organ, the skin!

The foundation of my education is of course as a trained esthetician, graduating in 2014, which is why I also offer fast and soothing waxing at the studio. After all, waxing is technically a skin treatment ;)

But my passion has always lied in helping people achieve glowing skin, intuitively understanding that our skin is a mirror for our whole body health. I found myself seeking a truly holistic approach and modality to further my studies. This search led me to pursue my training in Corneotherapy. You may be thinking “corneo-what-y?”, which is exactly why I wanted to share this post with you. Read on to learn more about my trained knowledge, certifications and what to expect at your next treatment!

Backed By Science

Corneotherapy is the cornerstone of my approach to treating your skin. It is a methodology based on the repair and maintenance of our skin barrier’s defence systems. It requires a deeper and more scientific understanding of the skin than established esthetics training provides as its focus is on the skin barrier, rather than the simple application of exfoliants and moisturisers. Which is why I always aim to use treatments and products that preserve the integrity of the skin, rather than disrupt it or cause the immune system to get involved (hence why I do not offer aggressive treatments such as microdermabrasion or lasers, which penetrate beyond the epidermis and its biologically active, sensitive cellular tissue). Healthy skin truly does start within, so my treatments are always customized to the individual. With each client, I aim to preserve the integrity of the skin while improving healthy cell function and uncovering the root cause of its condition. After all, our skin is an organ, responding to every attack in an understandable defense mode.

I am also passionate about learning, which is always leading me down a path of further study in search of ways to uplevel your skin’s health. Another important part of my philosophy is that I don’t believe in quick fixes or one-time-only appointments – your skin deserves commitment. For this reason, in 2017 I pursued further training in the highly scientific art of Microneedling. This treatment is my way of offering a “next step” in treatments, a perfect choice for anyone with concerns around scarring or aging. Grounded In Energy Work

My training as an Esthetician, Corneotherapist and Microneedling Technician is something I’m very proud of, but I feel it would be a missed opportunity to not ground my scientific approach in more ancient wisdom. The more I’ve learned about energy work and its effect on our whole body health, the more I’ve begun to consider it a crucial science as well. My certification in Advanced Holistic Facial Techniques (including the ancient Chinese secret to glowing skin known as Gua Sha, as well as Facial Cupping, and other holistic modalities such as Kansa Wand, Crystal Facials, and energy healing) has expanded my offerings, and allowed me to treat each patient in a truly holistic manner. The problems we all experience with our skin are often signs from our inner health and mental state, that require understanding, clearing and grounding in order to heal.

Focused on Relaxation

As you can see, I take a 360 degree approach to your skin’s health. Despite my passion for the science of facial treatments, I am also a huge proponent of self care and the power of relaxing the mind. Each of my treatments is enhanced by my training in massage, bodywork, alignment and mindfulness. Without a healing touch, I believe a facial treatment would fail to connect with your inner self. So much of healing your skin’s condition is a willingness to take time out of your busy schedule for yourself – to value your health and fill your own cup, above all else.

Human connection is everything, and a big part of my practice. So, prepare to be pampered and sink into a state of deep relaxation, while I silently treat your skin through scientific observations and personalized product selection.
